MTN Group stands as a monumental force in telecommunications across Africa and the Middle East. Serving a vast and diverse community of over 280 million people, MTN is more than a service provider; it is a vital connector of lives, a facilitator of commerce through MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), and a driver of digital inclusion. The MTN mobile app is a critical touchpoint in this ecosystem, serving as a primary gateway for users to manage their digital lives. We hold MTN in high regard and undertook this project to explore how design can further enhance such a pivotal platform.
This project was an internal initiative at Invollv to flex our strategic and creative muscles. Our goal was not to identify flaws but to explore potential future-states for a market-leading application. We asked ourselves:
“How might we further streamline user journeys for core tasks like airtime and data purchase?”
“What would a UI look like that feels even more intuitive and empowering for both new and power users?”
“How can we visually celebrate MTN’s vibrant brand while maximizing clarity and ease of use?”
This concept is our answer—a respectful proposal for how design principles can elevate an already robust platform.
Our conceptual process was built on foundational UX principles that we apply to all our projects.
A. Simplified User Flows:
We explored designs that could minimize the number of steps for high-frequency tasks. Our concept proposes:
A more focused dashboard that surfaces the user’s most relevant information and actions immediately.
Contextual action buttons and smart default options to reduce decision fatigue and accelerate task completion.
B. A refreshed, cohesive UI language:
We developed a visual concept that aims to be both modern and timeless, with:
A clean, airy interface that uses MTN’s iconic yellow brand color as a strategic accent for primary actions, enhancing scannability.
A consistent typographic scale and intuitive iconography to create a clear visual hierarchy and guide the user’s eye effortlessly.
A component-based design system that ensures consistency and scalability for future features.
C. Enhanced Clarity for Key Services:
With services like Mobile Money being so central to the user’s experience, our concept explores layouts and information architectures that prioritize:
Absolute clarity in transaction summaries.
Unmistakable confirmation states to build user confidence.
Easy access to transaction history and account details.
